If you're in the West Valley, and enjoy hitting the once a week farmers' markets, make sure to stop by Pierce College's Tomato Shack (on the corner of Victory & De Soto in Woodland Hills.) They're open every day of the week.
As you can see from Pierce's website they have more than just tomatoes, but their tomatoes are what I'm addicted to; they're red, ripe, firm yet soft, sweet and juicy...delicious! But now I'm spoiled and can no longer buy them at the supermarket again. And, hey, they grow them right there at Pierce and your money helps support their farm.
On my last weekly trip to the Tomato Shack, I was the only customer at the stand when the girl behind the counter said, as she handed me my tomatoes, "Wow, niiiiiiiice car."
I thought, hmmmm...it's nice, but nice enough for such an enthusiastic comment? I smiled and said, "Thanks!" Only to turn around and see the polished, cherry red Mercedes convertible with fawn leather seats pull in - looking about as succulent and curvy as the plump tomatoes in my hand. I slunked away hoping the counter girl didn't hear me.
Anyway, humiliated or not, I'll be back. The tomatoes are just too good.
*It's open every day from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. now through Sept. 15; the phone number at the Tomato Shack is 818-704-8599.
